HELP: if my car has several problems, will it be safe to drive it to the mechanic or what should I do? HELP: if my car has several problems, will it be safe to drive it to the mechanic or what should I do? Ok, so my car has several problems which have overwhelmed me and are beyond me and my patience. I bought a used car and it has become a pain because everyday I discover more new problems. To start with, I need an oil change, I bought a new timing belt and I need the mechanic to install it, the car has a small leak near the radiator cap which causes it to drip small amounts of coolant and let out vapor, I need to do tune up (change filters and other maintanance stuff), and I need to get a new battery installed. The car runs, but it has a very strange sound. It has 88K miles, and I am getting completely paranoid about driving it to the mechanic because I think its gonna break down on me. It would take me about 10 minutes to get to my mechanic drving at an average of 40 mph. I dont wanna rev the car too much so not to stress the engine (mainly because of low and old oil and timing belt) here's a video of how the engine sounds (NOTE: THE CAR DIDNT SOUND LIKE THIS WHEN I BOUGHT IT, the battery died and I jumped started it and it started with this weird sound) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QGO6TUB_EyQ What should I do? I am a young person and it is my first car. I only have a small amount of money and I had saved it for gas but nope just my luck I will have to spend it all on fixing the car. Jeep . Automotive Charging System TroubleshootingThe automotive charging system consists of the battery, the alternator, wiring and, in some cases, a charging system fuse or fusible link. Testing the charging system involves testing the battery, the alternator, fuses and wiring not only for voltage, but also for current capacity. This testing requires a digital volt/ohm meter, a load tester and an automotive circuit tester. You can find these tools at your local auto parts store. Battery Testing Clean the battery terminals before testing to make sure your tests produce accurate results. If the terminals are dirty, a voltage drop and intermittent connection can cause the charging system to malfunction. Set the digital volt/ohm meter to "volts d.c.," and attach the leads to the positive and negative battery terminals. The display should show more than 12.5 volts; anything less indicates a discharged battery. Charge the battery before proceeding with testing. Next, attach the cables of the load tester to the battery, and test the battery according to the instructions from the tool's manufacturer. Common load testers use a carbon pile to act as a resistive load. These testers get very hot, so take care not to get burned or start a fire. Under a load, the voltage should not drop below 12 volts. Such a drop indicates a defective battery, which you should replace. Wiring and Fuse Test the wiring and fuse to the alternator by checking for voltage at the large gauge power wire on the back of the alternator. This should show the battery voltage. Check any power fuse with the circuit tester. A good fuse will have power on both sides. Check the wiring for loose connections at the power distribution block (fuse block) and starter. Alternator Attach the digital volt/ohm meter to the battery, and note the battery voltage. Start the vehicle, and note the voltage again. The alternator should put out 13.5 to 14.0 volts in a normally functioning system.
Jeep . Ford Tractor Hydraulic System TroubleshootingFord tractors use hydraulic assist systems to raise, lower or move a variety of lifts, loaders and earth-moving tools. All Ford tractors have the same hydraulic components: a pump, reservoir, high-pressure filter, hoses and fittings and hydraulic pistons. Having "inline hydraulic systems" means that an operational problem with any of the components will affect all the systems. It's import to know about these vital parts of the Ford tractor hydraulic system when trying to resolve problems. Controls Check all the connections and control valves operating the system if the control reaction is slow. Inspect all the valves opening and closing within the system for full actuation. Slow valves mean that fluid doesn't get to the system and will not respond to control inputs. All valves need to be properly seated with tight fittings and seals. Direct cabling or motorized actuators operate the valves, depending on your Ford tractor model. Make sure the cables are tight and the motors perform to specifications. Fluid Check all the fittings attached to the pump, reservoir, filter housing, hoses and pistons if the system often needs more fluid, or you see fluid puddles of fluid around or on the Ford tractor. Check for pinhole leaks in the rubber hoses. Hoses can leak a lot of fluid through small holes under pressure. Don't repair, but replace damaged high-pressure hoses. The reservoir drain plug needs to be tight. Inspect all the seals on the pump assembly for any leaks, and tighten, repair or replace if necessary. Vibration Check all the clamps and mounts if your Ford tractor is vibrating too much when using the hydraulics. Go around and tighten all the plastic and stainless steel clamps and brackets. Always check these clamps when the system is pressurized. When the system is not operating, loose brackets or clamps night not be apparent. Power Check the pump and the fluid pressure if the hydraulic-powered apparatus appears weak and is not moving properly. Inspect the power supply for the hydraulic pump and drive belt to make sure both perform to specifications. Pumps will not achieve full pressure with a slipping belt. Check the reservoir and add fluid to correct levels. Do not overfill. Hydraulic systems work best with exact fluid levels. More fluid will not mean more power. Replace the filter regularly to avoid problems with accumulated contamination. If the filter is dirty or clogged, it will prevent the fluid from freely going from the reservoir to the pump and returning. Check the hydraulic pistons. Any dents or wearing can cause the pistons to bind and not move freely when pressurized. *diesel and conventional vehicles because cars run on air more than they run on fuel. The more air the engine can take in, the bigger the bang is during the power stroke. At first, cars were turbocharged to perform better on race tracks, but when car manufacturers began to use smaller engines on larger cars to lighten their weight and conserve fuel, turbocharging provided a way to increase the engine's power so that these big cars wouldn't be sluggish on the road. 128 Part II: What Makes It Go? The intake stroke Compression stroke -Exhaust valve Ignition stroke Exhaust stroke When it came to designing diesel cars, the problem was even more pressing: how to change a car with a reputation of being noisy, underpowered, and smoky into a faster, quieter, more efficient vehicle that could meet the EPA requirements. The results have been heartening indeed. A turbocharger can increase the power on a diesel car by 50 percent while lowering its fuel consumption by 20 to 25 percent! And, what's more, because the turbine itself is powered by the hot gases that normally would go out of the exhaust pipe, you don't need to provide anything extra to drive it. What a wonderful example of recycling! Jeep . What will the gass prices be in 30 years?
In 30 years the gass price will be about $7.00! Unless a onvenient Vehicle that doesn't run on gass is invented, we will be in... Volvo V50. Volvo V70. Volvo V90. Volvo XC60. Volvo XC70. Volvo XC90. Yugo Cabrio. Yugo GV. * .Chapter 6: The Fuel System: The Heart and Lungs of Your Car The nitty-gritty on turbocharging If you just can't get enough of this turbocharging stuff, the following gets a bit more specific about how turbocharging works: 1. The hot exhaust gases leave the exhaust manifold in much the same manner as they usually do. But instead of going directly through the exhaust system and out of the car via the tailpipe, they first pass through a turbine, which is nothing but a fan that's set in motion by the velocity of the passing gases. 2. A shaft connects the fan to a compressor, which blows fresh, filtered air into the cylinders. (On a gasoline-powered car, it takes the fuel/air mixture supplied by the carburetor and blows it into the cylinders.) Jeep . Would shifting from 1st 2nd to 3rd on an automatic damage the car while accelerating?
A car with an automatic transmission shifts itself from 1st to 2nd to 3rd when you accelerate. You don't need to shift... * 3. The excess and used exhaust fumes pass from the turbine to the exhaust system and continue on their way to the tailpipe and out into the air in their usual manner. 4. The more load on the engine, the hotter and faster are the exhaust fumes that turn the turbine. The faster they turn it, the more air the compressor sends to the engine and the faster the engine can go. This unique way of converting exhaust gas energy into mechanical power has a nice merry-goround effect. Sounds simple, doesn't it? Well, usually the first thing an engineer learns is "The simpler, the better," or, as the Zen monks put it, "Less is more." (Ecology, engineering, and philosophy all in a couple of paragraphs! Maybe I ought to change the name of this book to Zen and the Art of Auto Maintenance.) Don't confuse turbocharging with supercharging. A supercharger is a pump that compresses the fuel/air mixture and forces it into the cylinders of a gasoline-powered car: Because superchargers are usually belt-driven by the engine instead of by exhaust gases, they use engine power to increase engine power. Because they're not fuel efficient, they generally are used only to increase the speed of "high-performance," low-efficiency vehicles. Turbocharging kits are available that you can install on conventional vehicles to increase their power and performance. However, because turbocharging places considerable stress on engines that weren't designed with turbocharging in mind, you run the risk of damaging your engine and voiding all existing warranties if you decide to boost Old Faithful with a turbo kit. So investigate the situation carefully before you go this route. Some owners have had marvelous success, and their engines have lived to tell the tale; others haven't been as lucky. Generally speaking, I would never attempt to turbocharge the original engine of an older car, nor would I tinker with anything but a ruggedly built engine in top condition. If Old Faithful is beginning to show the strain of passing years, it would be wiser to recycle the old workhorse and buy yourself a turbo-powered filly! Part II: What Makes It Go? Jeep .
